Where Switzerland starts companies in 2026: Zurich leads on volume, Valais and Zug on intensity

Canton-by-canton company formation from the official register: Zurich added 5,538 companies in twelve months, but relative to register size, Valais (4.8%), Aargau and Zug (4.6%) are Switzerland's founding hotspots.

DataCantonsCompany formation

Around four thousand new companies are added to the Swiss commercial register every month in 2026 — 4,885 in June alone, the strongest month in our data. Where are they being founded? Regista tracks the official register (Zefix / SOGC), so we pulled the twelve-month formation numbers for every canton.

Volume: the big five

  • Zurich: 5,538 new register entries in twelve months — by far the largest absolute number.
  • Bern: 2,620.
  • Aargau: 2,040.
  • Zug: 1,940 — remarkable for a register a third the size of Zurich's.
  • Vaud: 1,909, just ahead of St. Gallen (1,754).

Intensity: a different map

Divide new formations by the size of each canton's existing register and the picture changes. Valais leads at roughly 4.8% — one new company per year for every 21 already registered — with Aargau and Zug at about 4.6% and Zurich at 4.3%. The Romandie heavyweights run cooler: Vaud at 2.9% and Geneva at 2.8%. Zug's number is the well-known holding-and-crypto effect; Valais' is the quieter surprise in the data.

Why it matters

If you sell to young companies — fiduciary services, insurance, banking, software — the formation map is your prospecting map. Regista's lead feed delivers exactly this: new register entries in your chosen cantons and sectors, every morning. And every company above is searchable the day it appears in the register.

Method note: twelve-month formation counts cover register entries with a recorded registration date in Regista's dataset (coverage of dated entries begins December 2025); monthly totals cite the same window. Register-size baselines are the full 744,362-entry official snapshot, 4 July 2026.
